Chap. five

The black crow wasn’t real. Or, it had been real, at one point, but now it was stuffed.

Astrid hated seeing animals that were stuffed. It was creepy and sad to see something that used to be alive, sitting there on someone’s shelf like it was a trophy or decoration.

Once she had everything she needed from her room, she said good-bye to her mom and stepped outside to a hot summer day.

Before she could get in her car, she headed to her window and looked closely at the stuffed animal.

It was just sitting there, staring into her window.

Astrid inspected it for a moment, then noticed a piece of paper sticking out from underneath its feet.

She gently pulled the paper out from under the bird’s feet, careful not to touch the bird itself. Then, she unfolded it and read what it said.

He’s home now, but it looks like it won’t be for long…Go to Widow Bridge at midnight tonight if you want to clear his name for good. -your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man

Astrid was confused as she read the note over and over again. The thing that got her the most confused was the fact that it was signed by your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Who knows that I like Spider-Man so much that they would write this? They obviously know more about me than they should…It’s not like I make it a big deal that I love Spider-Man.

She was a little creeped out by the message, but also curious. It was obvious that someone else knew that she was trying to clear her brother’s name.

She had no idea who it was, or how they knew, but she did know that it wouldn’t be smart to follow along with the note. It could be a trap. It could be dangerous. It could be a bad idea.

Astrid tucked the note in her pocket, then headed to her car.

Even though she knew it was a bad idea, she promised herself that she would think about following what the note said. She would think about it.

Ten minutes later Frank and Astrid were sitting on a blanket at a park, eating lunch.

Frank had picked up sandwiches at a restaurant, and Astrid had picked up some fresh fruit from the store.

“What made you want to spend a day with me?” Frank asked. “It’s very rare you want to spend a whole day with me,” he teased, bringing a smile to Astrid’s face.

“It’s been hectic at home. I woke up this morning to Jaydin being home, and I-” she stopped as Frank interrupted.

“What? How’s he even home?!”

She shook her head. “It didn’t really make a whole lot of sense. In fact, I know Jaydin is keeping something from me, but I just haven’t figured out what it is yet.”

“Tell me everything,” Frank demanded, taking Astrid’s hand gently, showing her that he cared.

After Astrid had explained the whole story, she took out the note that she had found beside the crow in front of her window.

Frank took it and read it, giving Astrid a look.

“Next time you find something in front of your window, or anything at all that scares you, call me. Please, Astrid. You can’t wait to tell me anything. It’s important that I know you’re safe.”

Astrid’s red hair blew a little in the breeze as she took it out of its ponytail. Then she nodded. “Okay, I promise.”

“So, you weren’t planning on following along with this note, were you?”

Astrid looked down at the grass, then looked back up at her boyfriend. “Should I?”

“Of course not! It could be a trap!” Frank exclaimed. “But,” he added, “we could set up a trap of our own and try to catch whoever this is in the act of doing whatever they’re trying to do.”

“You mean a stake-out?!” Astrid asked, feeling a little intrigued by the idea.

“Yep. We can hide somewhere near the bridge, and get a mannequin. We could dress it up to look like you and fool this person!”

“Actually, that’s a pretty great idea!” Astrid said, smiling. “We should do it!”

Frank stood up, pulling Astrid along with him. Then he gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, pulling her close to him. “Tonight. Midnight. You and me. Stake-out.”

Astrid grinned, giving Frank a big hug.

So, that was chapter five! Fun fact: I love Spider-Man. I don't have a favorite Spider-Man, but I love the movies.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I'm possibly going to post the next one on either Sunday or Monday.

Yeah, stay tuned...~Ella
