Innocent Until Proven Guilty (a short story-chap. three)

Okay, I know you've got to be loving this short story by now! It's starting to get super exciting! (;

This is chapter three! As always, if you're behind, you might want to catch up with the links below:

Chap. three

“What do you mean you think this girl named Amylee Anderson framed your brother?” Frank asked, scratching his head in thought.

“I know it sounds like I’m jumping to conclusions, but why else would Amylee move and never contact her family? She’s obviously got something to hide. And, the fact that she wants to stay ‘anonymous to the world’ could mean that she knows something. I don’t know for sure yet if it’s about my brother, but it sure as heck could be.”

Frank smiled at Astrid. “You sound really sure of yourself. Maybe we should ask Amylee ourselves. You’ve got her number, don’t you?”

Astrid nodded, pulling out her phone. Frank sat beside her on the edge of the bed and watched as she dialed Amylee’s number.

“If she doesn’t answer I’m probably going to break this phone,” Astrid mumbled as Frank put a hand on Astrid’s slightly trembling fingers.

“Do you want me to press the call button?”

“Nope, I’ve got it,” Astrid said, trying to get a hold of herself. She hated calling strangers, especially when they might have something to do with her brother’s situation. It was nerve-wracking because one call could completely change everything.

It brought her back to the moment her grandma had died. She learned about it on the phone, and it hurt. She never wanted to hear bad news on the phone again.

“Hello?” a grown woman answered the phone after the fifth ring.

“Hi! Is this Amylee Anderson?” Astrid asked, squeezing Frank’s hand with her other hand that wasn’t holding the phone.

“Umm…yes. Who is this?” Amylee replied.

“My name is Astrid Simmons. I’m a senior at Maple High. I was just speaking with your sister, Marie, and she gave me your number.”

Amylee groaned. “Why? Why did my sister give you my number?”

Astrid let out the deep breath she had been holding. “Because I told her I wanted to talk to you.”

“About?” Amylee asked, getting impatient.

“About my brother, Jaydin Simmons. The one you’re staring at in the yearbook picture. The year you were a junior-”

“And he was a senior,” Amylee finished, not sounding surprised at all.

“You know what I’m talking about?”

“Yep,” Amylee said. “I know exactly what you’re talking about. And I’m sorry that you’re calling. I’m sorry I was staring at him. I probably looked psychotic. Well, it probably looked like that. I mean, I’m sorry it looked like I was staring at your brother.”

“Huh? What do you mean ‘it looked like’ you were staring at my brother?”

Amylee sighed. “I wasn’t looking at your brother. I was looking at someone else. Someone I used to hate a whole lot. That’s why I decided to go to college in Nebraska. That’s the whole reason I’m here. I’m away from him.”

Astrid let go of Frank’s hand, and instead stood up and began to pace. “Who? Who were you running away from?”

“I was running away from…” she trailed off, and when she began talking again, she sounded almost scared. “The jersey. The blue and white jersey, Astrid. And the black bird. Specifically the black crow.” Then the phone went dead.

Please tell me that was a really good cliffhanger! Cliffhangers are fun sometimes! I'm excited for you to read chapter four!! Again, I'm not for sure when it will be out. But, this one is coming out on a Saturday, so maybe Monday? Get excited!! ~Ella
