The Messengers: A Christmas Short Story (blogmas day twelve)

Chapter five:

There was a knock at the door, and Bridgette opened the door slowly. She looked around, but saw no one. Then, she looked down and saw a present wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper. Who could this be from? She picked up the gift and went back inside to open it.

“We just got an anonymous package in the mail!” Bridgette called her older sister. She began unwrapping it, and was surprised to find a whole bunch of gift cards to different places. She smiled really big, and then almost screamed her sister’s name. “Annie! You have got to come see this right now!”

Annie appeared in the hallway a couple of minutes later, and came to see what Bridgette had been getting excited about. When she saw what was in the package, her heart almost melted.

Annie and her sister Bridgette had lost their parents several years before, and were living on their own. Annie was sixteen, and Bridgette was thirty. Bridgette and her husband had been having a hard time paying the bills, and were not even sure if they would be able to keep their house. The mysterious package delivered to them on their doorstep would help them a lot during the Christmas holiday, and for a long while.

Annie picked up each gift card gently, as if it was fragile, and at the bottom of the pile she almost gasped. “Bridge! There’s money here! Enough to pay all of our dues for the house!” Annie gave her sister a big hug, and wondered how she could thank this secret ‘Santa.’

A couple of houses down the street, a little girl opened her front door to see a dog sitting there. There was a little bow in his mouth, and a huge bag of dog food with its own bowl sitting by the dog. “Mommy! Santa answered my Christmas wish!” the little girl cried.

Her name was Mandy, and her family had wanted to get her a pet for Christmas, but wasn’t able to find the right one. Mandy was allergic to some dogs, and others were too big or too small for her to take care of. But the one sitting on her doorstep was perfect, and her mom and dad wondered how they could thank the person who had left this adorable dog on their doorstep.

Emma opened the door and picked up a basket filled with treats, and even a ticket to go to the annual Christmas parade on Christmas Eve. She smiled and cheerfully went through the basket. She wanted to know who had given her a delightful present, but she couldn’t think of anyone she knew who would do something nice for her.

Her family was never there for her, and she barely saw them. She was beginning to think Christmas would be really sad, but now she knew things were looking up for her.

The last chapter of this short story will be coming out soon! Stay tuned! ~Ella
