Chap. six

It was way too late at night for Astrid to be hiding behind bushes near Widow Bridge, but at least she wasn’t alone.

Frank was crouched beside her, and they were waiting for someone to approach the bridge.

“Do you think they will come?” Astrid whispered to Frank.

“Just be patient Ash,” he said gently, looking back at the bridge.

Astrid tucked a piece of hair behind her ear, sighing. She could be patient, yes she could.

Twenty minutes into the night, Astrid could not stop yawning, but she was determined to stay where she was until she heard something or saw someone. She did not decide to do a stake-out to fail.

It wasn’t too long after twelve thirty that someone appeared on the bridge, and Astrid held her breath while she watched, Frank silent beside her.

Whoever was standing on the bridge was wearing a beanie, pulled low over their head so Astrid couldn’t see what they looked like. Even though there were several streetlights all around them, she couldn’t tell who she was looking at, and it was frustrating.

After Astrid and Frank sat watching for what felt like another long hour, another figure appeared.

“Are you stupid?!” The person who had been waiting at the bridge first asked.

“No, I’m just good at getting what I want,” the second person said.

After hearing the two talk, it was evident that it was two males on the bridge, but Astrid couldn’t remember if she’d ever heard the voices before.

“Obviously not. She didn’t come tonight. I know you wanted her too,” one of them said. The one Astrid was naming Person One because he had appeared first.

“I knew she wouldn’t come. But, what I don’t understand is why you’re here. How’d you know about this meeting? How are you out of prison?”

When the words ‘out of prison’ were uttered, Astrid put a hand to her mouth to stop herself from calling out loud.

Person One was her brother. It had to be. He had found out about the note somehow, and now he was meeting whoever she was supposed to meet. But why? How did Jaydin know this person? Did this have to do with whatever secret he was keeping? And why was she in the middle of it? Why was she the one getting weird notes?

“You shut up. How I’m out is none of your business,” Jaydin said loudly. “I know you don’t care about what happens to me. You never did. But you promised. You promised you would leave her out of it!”

“No I didn’t,” the other person said. “I told you I wouldn’t hurt her if you turned yourself in. What I do after you’re long gone to prison doesn’t have anything to do with you. You weren’t supposed to be here anyway.”

Jaydin didn’t say anything. Astrid watched him stand there glaring at the other boy.

She knew they were talking about her. She knew whoever Jaydin was with right in that moment was the person she should be afraid of. Whoever Jaydin was talking to was the one who’d left the crow, the note. The one who scared Amylee away. The one with the blue and white jersey.

Suddenly, the other guy started walking towards Jaydin.

It didn’t take long for Astrid to notice that Jaydin’s back was to the bridge.

It didn’t take long for her to notice that he was in danger.

“Frank!” she whispered, putting a hand on his arm. “We have to help him. That’s my brother over there. The one with his back against the bridge.”

“Are you sure?” Frank asked as Astrid nodded.

“What are you doing?!” Frank and Astrid heard Jaydin call out.

Jaydin was being cornered by the other person. And the person was holding a weapon, but Astrid couldn’t tell what kind of weapon it was.

All she knew was that her brother was in danger.

“I asked you what you were doing!” Jaydin yelled, demanding an answer.

“What do you think I’m doing?” he, the one behind everything, asked. “I’m getting rid of you. You shouldn’t be here. You know too much.”

Jaydin was right at the edge of the bridge at that point, and Astrid was standing up, ready to make herself known.

“Wait, don’t do anything stupid Astrid,” Frank said into her ear. He was standing now too, and he had a firm hand on her shoulder.

Astrid looked back at her boyfriend, and before he could do anything, she wrenched out of his grip and yelled. “I’M RIGHT HERE! I came. I followed the note and I came. Now stop trying to hurt my brother, Spider-Man.”

That was chapter six. Umm...this may be my favorite story I've ever written. I really hope you're loving every chapter so far!! I promise there's more to come. I'm not going to leave you hanging. ~Ella
