Hey, it's been a while, but I'm finally ready to share chapter seven with you. This is what I like to call a filler chapter. It's short, and it's not much, but it's like the chapter leading up to the conclusion. Obviously, this story has to be wrapped up somehow. So, this chapter is going to lead up to the last chapters of this short story that will wrap the whole story up.
Okay, now that you understand, here's chapter seven...
(Recap of six: Frank and Astrid were waiting to see who had left her the note about meeting at Widow Bridge. To figure out who had left the note, they decided to have a stake-out and try to catch the person. But, things went differently then planned and Astrid watched her brother approach someone she did not know. And, Jaydin almost got killed, but Astrid saved his life.)
Chap. seven
Frank was furious, and Astrid felt about the same way. She had let him get away. He had run away.
She knew she had no right to be mad at Frank for being the one to make sure she was safe, but she couldn’t help but be mad.
After she had made herself known on the bridge the night before, whoever Jaydin was talking to had taken one look at her and ran the opposite way. She hadn’t even gotten a chance to see his face.
Astrid recalled the moment Jaydin had turned to her and given her the worst look she had ever gotten. It was as if she was the most hated person on the planet for trying to save her brother from drowning.
“I’m going on a walk,” Astrid said, giving her mom a small smile before heading out the door.
She needed time to think. Time to grasp everything that had happened at the bridge only a few hours ago.
She needed time to figure out what she needed to do next.
It was overwhelming not to seem to have any answers. Not to have anything figured out.
Astrid had only been gone for ten minutes. She had been checking her phone a lot just because she wanted to know if Frank was going to text and ask what the next step was. But, he didn’t. Instead, she got a text from an unknown number.
It read, So you ruined the little party last night…but I’ll give you a chance to patch things up.
Astrid stopped walking. She couldn’t believe her eyes.
This person wasn’t going to quit, were they? Until she gave them what they wanted. But, the question Astrid knew she should be focused on was, what exactly did this person want from her?
When Astrid built up the nerve to look back down at her phone, she opened a new text from the unknown messenger.
I’d like to formally introduce myself, it said.
Astrid stared down at her phone, waiting for another message, but she didn’t get one. Instead, she heard a car approaching, and looked up at the road.
She was standing on the sidewalk, watching the car as it approached her.
Instead of passing by her, the car stopped, and all Astrid could see was a guy dressed up in a costume. His face was completely covered, and she only knew it was a guy because of the shirt he was wearing.
It looked familiar. Almost like she had seen this person before.
There could be a bazillion people that I’ve seen wearing that same shirt, she thought, but I’m sure I’ve met this person before. I’m just sure of it.
After all, why would a stranger purposefully target her? It just had to be someone she knew.
She stared at the guy in the car for a second, then asked, “What do you want?”
In response, the guy rolled down the window and threw a rolled up piece of paper close to where Astrid was standing. Then, he drove off.
Astrid watched him go, then suspiciously picked up the paper and unrolled it.
In sloppy handwriting was a note that said, Deliver this message for me. I’d do it myself, but it’s better if you do it. Tell Jaydin he’s not welcome in this town anymore. He better leave while he has the chance, for your own safety.
Astrid looked back where the car had been a moment before. And she recalled the license number plate, make of the car, and color.
He may have wanted to introduce himself, but he also may have introduced his car.
I plan on wrapping this story up soon. I think there will end up being ten chapters total. I'm also thinking about this story being in my next book: which I haven't really announced yet, I plan on being a book of short stories. Ummmm....so lucky you for being one of the first ones to know what my next book will probably be about. I promise it's going to be good, but it's also gonna be a long wait. So, if you haven't already, you should go buy my book that's already out: https://www.amazon.com/Quoted-Guide-Girls-Ella-Catherine/dp/1638740585
Thanks for reading today's chapter!! Come back in a few days for the next!! So excited for everything coming in the future, and I'm thankful you're here. (: ~Ella
