Hey, so on Thursday's blog post, I let you know that I would be posting the next chapter to my book I'm writing. I've only decided to share two chapters, as I don't want to give away much. But, I hope you like them!
Chapter two
“Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one!!!” Brooke screamed as Laura popped the balloon her best friend was holding.
Laura was working at a new job helping people plan for weddings. Brooke was also working with her, and had suggested the girls have some fun while they waited for their next customer. Both girls knew it was a bad idea, but couldn’t help themselves. Laura couldn’t remember the last time she had had any fun since Luna. Luna…
Once the name was etched into Laura’s mind, she couldn’t forget about it again. She needed to start investigating, or it might be too late for Luna.
“Brooke? Have you read any of those detective books that I’ve given you?” Brooke looked at her best friend like she had no idea what she was talking about. “You know, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Sherlock Holmes?” Laura reminded her.
“Ughh...nope.” Brooke frowned when she saw Laura’s face. “I’m so sorry, L! I have been really busy lately, and didn’t have any time to even look at them. Why did you want me to read them, anyway? Did you expect me to learn something about how to find Luna? I really don’t think you should be trying to investigate her at all. Like, just let the police do their job. You need to relax for once and stop trying to figure everything out on your own.”
Laura felt like she was going to cry. “I’m not trying to figure everything out on my own! God’s helping me. He’s helping me get through every day without having any thoughts about what could have gone wrong. He’s reminding me that I can find my sister, and that there’s still hope! How could you say something like that? Do you just expect me to stand by while my sister could be in danger?!” Laura almost yelled, getting heated. “I thought if you would just read those books, you would learn something about detective work. I thought-I thought I could get my best friend to help me find my sister. I thought you would understand. But I guess I was wrong!” Laura threw the needle she was holding on the table, and brushed her hands through her long, blonde hair. Then she grabbed her purse and ran out of the room, leaving a dumbfounded Brooke watching her.
A minute later, Laura collapsed onto a bench located near a wedding venue. She buried her head in her hands and let every tear fall. Tears for her lost sister, lost friendship, and the fact that she had no idea how to find any evidence to prove to everyone that Luna was still alive. God was the only one that believed in her. She knew that it would be difficult to convince anyone else.
When she had collected herself a little, she found herself walking to a church where weddings were held on days when it was raining. Laura set her purse down on a pew, and sat down at a white piano.
She began playing a song she used to play with Luna when she was taking piano lessons every week. The words came back to her as she played.
“We woke up in the summertime. We woke up to the butterflies. I watched you as you said hello, then goodbye.” Laura looked at the piano keys as she played, trying not to cry. “I took a deep breath when the rain poured. I let it out when your smile caught my eye. You were my best friend, ‘till the end. Until you disappeared before my eyes. I wish I had had the chance to give you a hug before you died.” She ended off the song by singing, “Oooooooooooooo.”
As soon as Laura hit the last key, clapping began behind her. “Whoo! That was good, but really sad. Is that a true story?” Someone standing behind her asked.
Laura looked behind her, just a little bit startled. “I’m sorry?” She asked as she noticed a boy around her age staring at her. He was wearing khaki shorts, a red T-shirt, and tennis shoes.
“I said, that was good, but was it a true story?” he repeated himself.
“Um,” Laura slid off the piano seat to face the stranger. “I wasn’t the one who wrote it, so I have no idea. It does sound like a true story though.” She pushed a piece of hair behind her ear, feeling awkward. “Can I ask, who are you?”
“I’m-” he began, then was interrupted by Brooke, who rushed towards Laura, giving her a big hug.
“I’m so sorry for what I said!! Please forgive me, Laura. Please!” Brooke squeezed Laura until Laura couldn’t breath.
“Let go please, Brooke.”
Brooke let go, “I’m sorry! I really am.”
“Okay, I get it,” Laura pushed herself away from her best friend, then looked where the boy had been standing. “Where did he go?” Laura turned around and looked everywhere for the stranger. But, to her dismay, he was gone.
“What? Where did who go?” Brooke asked, confused.
“That boy! He was just there a minute ago. I swear!! He said he liked the song I was playing…” she trailed off.
“Whatever,” Brooke gave up and left Laura standing alone. Laura watched her go, then she sat back down at the piano.
Even though she was still confused about the boy who had appeared out of nowhere, and disappeared at the same time, she didn’t feel like it was anything to worry about, so she continued playing piano.
Fifteen minutes later, Laura found herself sitting at her desk in her bedroom, Googling her sister’s name.
She typed Luna Robertson in the search bar, and hit search. Several news stories came up, and Laura couldn’t bring herself to click on any of them. She was looking for any clues about her sister’s disappearance, but soon realized that it would be harder than she had thought.
Fun fact: I actually wrote the song that Laura sang above. I could make it into a piano cover if anyone wonders what it actually sounds like..? Anyway, that was chapter two! There's definitely more, but I'm not going to share it just yet. ~Ella
