a book review // Screenshot by Donna Cooner

“Skye’s social media game is always on point. Until her best friend, Asha, posts an embarrassing video of Skye at a sleepover. But Asha deletes the post, so everything’s okay. Right?

Then someone texts Skye a screenshot from the video. This person threatens to share the shocking photo everywhere...unless Skye does whatever they say. Suddenly, Skye’s perfect image-and privacy-are in jeopardy. What will Skye do to keep the screenshot under wraps? And who is trying to ruin her life?”

Screenshot by Donna Cooner amazed me. It made me realize just how far people are willing to go for their reputation. Skye was threatened by an embarrassing photo, and even though she had no idea who had sent her the picture, and the threats, she was willing to believe that she had to do whatever she could to save her social status.

She was so caught up in her image, and how she would look if that photo got sent out to everyone, that she didn’t tell anyone about the blackmail, and she responded to the threats. (It’s very hard not to give away what actually happens*)

At the end of the book, we see Skye going from being insecure, and scared of how others would think of her, to being brave, and confident in herself, and the way she looks.

I want all of us to be confident in ourselves, and love ourselves, but of course, we aren’t always like that. We are insecure sometimes, and sometimes we can admit to not loving ourselves, and not loving who we are in Christ.

I felt impacted just by reading this book because the plot was genius, and everything that happened was the perfect story to explain how even social media can affect the way we look at ourselves.

Skye stepped up, and decided she wasn’t willing to be threatened or blackmailed by anyone. She really learned who she was, and that she could be herself.

How many times have we looked at ourselves in the mirror and frowned? How many times have we compared ourselves to someone we think looks better than us? How many times have we scrolled through Instagram, or TikTok, and wished we could be someone else? How many times?

Well, I have something really important to tell you, and you better listen! You are beautiful just the way you are. It’s so important that you know that. I don’t like seeing people who have gotten plastic surgery, or altered their appearance in any way because I believe we are all beautiful just the way God created us to be. I don’t think we need to bring ourselves down so much.

Lastly, your reputation on social media is nothing compared to your reputation in God’s eyes. At the end of the day, God loves you for who you are, and nothing can make Him think otherwise. At the end of the day, social media won’t always be your best friend.

Sometimes we just need to take a break from it, and take a break from makeup, and insecurity. Take a day for yourself to realize who you are in Christ. Because you are someone worthy of being loved, and knowing that you are loved. Stop bringing yourself down because of the way others think of you. Stop staring at yourself in the mirror and telling yourself your ugly.

A quote that really stuck out to me from Screenshot was, “Perfect is a lie.”

And it is true. Perfect is a lie. You can’t be perfect. Social media can’t make you perfect. You are beautiful, worthy, loved just the way you are. Take that with you today, and know God loves you so much. ~Ella
