In first Samuel chapter seventeen, we read about David and Goliath. I find this chapter very interesting and I wanted to write about it today.
So, in first Samuel, we read that the Philistines are gathering their armies for battle. The Philistines took their post on one side of a mountain, and Israel stood on the other side of the mountain. Then out came Goliath of Gath, and according to first Samuel 17:4, "...whose height was six cubits and a span. According to Google, six cubits and a span is also nine feet and nine inches. I'm not very good with measurements, but that looks very tall!
David, "the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah," was told to take something to his brothers by Jesse. So, the next morning David heads down to the camp where is brothers are preparing to fight Goliath and where all the Israelites were preparing. David overheard the men of Israel talking about Goliath, and how tall he was.
I wonder if hearing about Goliath suddenly sparked the idea of what he would do next in his mind? Maybe God placed the right thought in David's mind so he would know what to do.
As you all probably already know, David volunteered to kill Goliath. David picked up three smooth stones, and walked over to Goliath bearing no armor. Then, Goliath pretty much laughed at David because he thought it was so funny that a young boy thought he could kill him. But David knew that God was on his side, and he was not going to give up.
In the end, David killed Goliath with one simple stone, and the Philistines became the Israelites slaves.
What I want you to take with you from this story today is that God always has a plan. Every plan He has is good, or it might not seem good, but it will work together for good. God took David's fear away, and David trusted in God. He trusted that God would help him kill Goliath.
