"Marie? Will you please go open the door for your little sister?" Marie nodded and ran to the door. Her little sister Emily had just gotten home from her first day of middle school. She had ridden the bus home, and Marie wanted to know how her day went.
Marie opened the door and gasped, "Where's Emily?!" she cried aloud. Standing on the doorstep was her grandfather, who lived with them, and had just gotten home from grocery shopping, but looked like he had been crying.
Grandfather looked at Emily's scared sister, and patted her on the shoulder. "She'll be okay...just at the hospital to get checked on...everyone will be fine..." he mumbled.
At that point, Mom had come to the door to see what was going on. "Where's Emily? Dad, you're gonna have to explain what happened," Mom said calmly.
"She..Her...Bus toppled over on its side, and the ambulance came. All the kids and the driver seem to be okay, but they are all at the-the hospital getting checked on," Grandfather said.
Mom put her hands over her eyes for a minute, then took them away and looked at her father and child. "Dad, Marie. We have to get to the hospital and make sure everything is okay! Come on!" Mom grabbed her purse and car keys, and they all headed to the car, only to find out that they had run out of gas, and they would have to wait until Marie's father got home to fill up the tank.
"We could take the bus, or get a neighbor to drive us," Marie said.
"No, we are definitely not taking the bus, but we can ask the Medley's next door if we can borrow their car." Mom walked next door to their neighbors' house and knocked on the door. No one answered. By this point, Mom, Marie, and Grandfather were beginning to get very worried. It seemed like they weren't going to be able to get to the hospital to check on Emily and the other kids on the bus.
Marie got a notification on her phone, and it read, Through anything bad that happens in your life, God will be with you, and you need to trust Him. Marie looked at her mother, and said, "We need to stay right here, and wait for the doctor to call us about Emily. I'm sure someone will be able to bring her home if we explain what happened."
Mom looked at Marie in shock, "We can't just leave Emily at the hospital alone!"
"She won't be alone. She has God with her," Marie concluded.
Through everything bad that happens in your life, God will be with you, and you need to trust in Him. Sometimes it's hard to trust God when you are going through something that's hard. When I look at this short story, I see a scared Grandfather, a worried sister, and a calm Mom who just wants to make sure her child is okay. I know we might not always get notifications on our phones that remind us that everything will be okay, and God is always with us, but even though notifications like that may not pop up on your phone, you still need to remember through everything to trust in God, and know He will get you through every hardship, and every day.
At the end of the short story, we see Marie's response to the text she got on her phone. It was that text that reminded her of the importance of trusting in God. She let her Mom know that everything would be okay, and that Emily was not alone because God was with her, just like He was with them. Just like God is and will always be with you! Take that with you today! ~Ella
